Children and adults swarmed around Quokka Man - welcoming and wishing him well in his fight to save Arcadia.
The Arcadia forest (30kms east of Bunbury) is destined to be logged this month by the government arm of the logging industry, the Forest Product Commission, and local residents are concerned that a small colony of mainland quokka living in Arcadia won’t survive the logging operation.
Preston Environment Group spokesperson Peter Murphy said he hoped that Quokka Man can succeed in creating more public awareness on Arcadia and its small colony of quokka which are going to be destroyed at an economic and ecological loss to all West Australians.
Quokka Man’s strategy is to disrupt logging by handing out ‘Move On’ notices to government agencies that are deemed in breach of the WA Wildlife Conservation Act and Federal Environmental Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act, and to also dismantle illegal logging infrastructure.
Quokka Man will also visit local schools - conveying the message to children that logging Arcadia is a crime against nature and will rob future generations of their heritage.
Quokka Man will now commence conservation work this week by removing hundreds of feral pine trees that have invaded Arcadia from a nearby FPC pine plantation.
The Preston Environment Group accepts no responsibility or liability for Quokka Man’s actions inside or outside Arcadia forest.
